Board of Directors
Mindy Nathan
DIRECTOR
Mindy Nathan has been officially in education since she was elected to the Bloomfield Hills Board of Education in 1993. In her 10 years of service she was board president for three years, and vice president for one year. Overlapping her board work (a volunteer position), were several years in a supplemental religious school, and a 4 year stint at Walsh College, where she taught Business Writing to adult learners.
Mindy’s dream was to become credentialed to teach at a high school, so she enrolled at Wayne State University, where she received a Master of Arts degree, in Teaching (a M.A.T.) for secondary English and History in 2004. She was hired to teach 9th grade English, which she did for three years.
Mindy left teaching after being hand-picked by Berkley Schools to create their alternative education high school, which was renamed The Tri-County Educational Center, and became the project of which she is most proud. She had the joy of working with several very talented members of the Stearnes/Thompson family. Joyce Stearnes Thompson and her late Mom, Nettie, were regular visitors when we were affiliated with the original Tri-County Educational Center, (TCEC) run by Berkley Schools. The family was much-loved by our students. On those special days, our students felt seen and heard and appreciated by these outstanding women educators. They loved the stories about The Detroit Stars, and some of them got to attend the Negro Leagues' celebration weekend.
Mindy is currently teaching Middle School students at the James and Grace Lee Boggs School in Detroit.
